Express Goaltender Set to Join Teammate this Fall

WALPOLE, MA -- Eric Buchholz, a goaltender for the Walpole Express, has committed to Rivier University for the fall of 2021.

The '01 native of Peyton, CO is in his second season with the Express, after playing in only a handful of games this past year, combined between the Eastern Hockey League (EHL) and the Eastern Hockey League Premier (EHLP). Things have followed a complete opposite pattern this season, as combined with Mason Palmer, the Express own one of the best goaltending duos in the league.

"Eric has stayed so committed to the process over his two seasons here in Walpole," said Express head coach and general manager Cody Campbell. "He came here last year as our #3 goalie knowing he was going to get very limited, if any, playing time. He stuck to the process, worked hard every day, and positioned himself to have a really good season this year. This season, Eric has been reliable and consistently calms things down when he’s in the net for our team. I couldn’t be more proud of Eric and his trust in our culture."

As Campbell mentioned, Bucholz truly trusted the process and made the most of his opportunity when it was presented. The netminder also could still come back next season for an additional season of junior hockey, but feels ready for the next level now, and knows Rivier is the perfect spot for him.

"Rivier has the major that I want to pursue and Coach Sorenson made me feel comfortable about the situation by giving me a better understanding on the college process," said Bucholz. "The academics were also a big part of the process because my parents and I were focused on that as much as the athletics.”

Bucholz is proud to have found the perfect spot for himself to shine at the next level, and he gives all the credit to what his time with the Express has taught him.

"Playing for Walpole for the past two years has prepared me as a hockey player and as a person," said Bucholz. "Coach Campbell has helped me tremendously in developing me both on and off the ice. I have learned so much from him over the past few years. He’s helped me focus on my game and made sure I stay on track and focused day in and day out. Also, being in a billet family the past two years made me focus on becoming an adult while focusing on hockey. I’d like to thank Coach Campbell for helping me reach my goal of college hockey and for giving me a chance to play junior hockey in Walpole.”

Bucholz and the Express kick-off their 2nd half tonight at 6:30 pm when they host the Western Mass Chiefs. With this weight now off of his shoulders, Bucholz can turn his full attention towards further developing his game in the 2nd half, as well as helping his team make a run to the EHL Frozen Finals.
