Wolves All-Star Goaltender Set to Join New Program this Fall

LACONIA, NH -- LJ Newell, a goaltender for the New England Wolves, has committed to Rivier University for the fall of 2021.

The 2000-born native of Colorado Springs, CO is in his 2nd season with the Wolves, and over the course of his Eastern Hockey League (EHL) career, he's won 18 games between the pipes.

"We at the Wolves are very happy to help LJ accomplish his goal of playing NCAA hockey," said Wolves head coach Tim Kunes. "LJ is a great kid and a leader in our program, and he has proven himself to be a top goalie in the EHL over the last two seasons."

As Kunes mentioned, Newell has truly proven himself over the past two seasons, and this was acknowledged when the veteran netminder was named an EHL All-Star back in November. LJ endured a unique Road to the EHL, but it ultimately led to this moment, and for that he is beyond grateful.

"I'm very grateful for the Wolves program and the opportunity they have given me to develop," said Newell. "I would not be who I am as a player today without the Wolves and their commitment to pushing their players both on and off the ice. I am very excited to join Rivier and fulfill my dream of playing college hockey."

Newell is now set to join a new program this fall, as alongside head coach Eric Sorenson, the process of creating a culture is underway at Rivier University.

"We are extremely excited to have LJ’s commitment to join the Rivier Raider community," said Sorenson. "Throughout the recruitment process, he has made it clear that he is an extraordinarily intelligent, hard working, and committed individual, both on and off the ice. It is that type of work ethic that I believe will translate tremendously to both our inaugural men’s ice hockey team next fall, and in the classroom where he will be joining one of the top nursing programs in both New England, and the country. He is coming from a tremendous program in the Wolves, that has put together a regimented daily schedule that truly helps prepare student athletes for the next level both academically and athletically, and we are excited to have him here next fall."
