Avalanche All-Star Goaltender Set to Join Polar Bears this Fall

HOOKSETT, NH -- George McMichael, a goaltender for the New Hampshire Avalanche, has committed to Bowdoin College for the fall of 2021.

The 2000-born native of Goldens Bridge, NY is in his 2nd season with the Avalanche, and first full year at the Eastern Hockey League (EHL) level. This past season (2019-20), McMichael played in five games apiece in both the EHL and the Eastern Hockey League Premier (EHLP).

"George believed in the process," said Avalanche head coach and general manager Chris Cerrella. "Last season he got in a few EHL games and also played with our premier team as well. He worked very hard in the offseason, and in my opinion, has become the best goalie in the EHL during the 2020-21 season. He is an outstanding student-athlete who has reached his goal both on the ice and in the classroom. He is going to be an outstanding addition to the Bowdoin community. We are very excited for George and his family; we will miss him around the rink next season."

Looking back on the 2019-20 season, McMichael posted a combined record of 6-3-0 in nine total starts between the EHL and the EHLP. After finishing the season at the EHLP level, McMichael put in the extra work this past offseason to help earn himself EHL All-Star recognition back in November. That recognition, along with the guidance of the Avalanche staff, has McMichael feeling beyond grateful to make this commitment to such a prestigious academic institution.

"Playing junior hockey with the Avs has prepared me for college hockey," said McMichael. "I want to thank Coach Cerrella, Coach Martiniello, and Coach Caliguiri for passionately advocating hard work on and off the ice. The Avs’ athletic trainer Coach Soryal helped me to physically develop as an athlete by providing an encouraging training environment at Roots. The Avalanche goalie coaches Rob Day and Kevin LaCroix are great because they help me understand the mental part of goaltending. I also need to give a shoutout to my hometown goalie coach Bobby Leiser of Sentinel Goalie Consultants, who has coached and guided me since I was a peewee. Special thanks to my family, friends, teammates, and all of my prior coaches for your support and amazing memories along the way. Coach Dumont and Coach Moore at Bowdoin College have been supportive and welcoming since our first conversation. I am very excited to join the Bowdoin community and play for the Polar Bears!"

To date this season, McMichael ranks as one of the top goaltenders in the entire league. With a record of 16-3-1, plus a 2.14 GAA and a .935 save percentage, McMichael has established himself as a top candidate to win the 2020-21 EHL Goalie of the Year award.
