Rangers All-Star Forward Set to Join Golden Flyers this Fall

TEWKSBURY, MA -- Joey Schaefer, a forward for the Boston Jr. Rangers, has committed to Nazareth College for the fall of 2021.

The 2000-born native of Bethesda, MD is in his 2nd season with the Rangers, and in 77 career games in the Eastern Hockey League (EHL), he's scored 30 goals and collected 39 assists.

"I'm very happy for Joey and his commitment to Nazareth," said Rangers head coach and general manager Rich DeCaprio. "He’s worked really hard at becoming a better player both on and off the ice, and has made tremendous strides as a leader.  He’s been a lot of fun to coach, and he will do great things at the college level!  We look forward to watching him next season."

While Schaefer goes in the books as just the 2nd player in Rangers' history to choose Nazareth, he's also the 20th player in league history to make this decision. To date this season, the Rangers' assistant captain is one of three EHL players heading to Nazareth this fall, as he will become new teammates with both Keith Davenport and Ryan Turse from the East Coast Wizards.

"I am looking forward to furthering my hockey and academic careers at Nazareth College under Coach Roll," said Schaefer. "Thank you to Coach DeCaprio, Coach Aucoin, and the Boston Jr. Rangers organization for helping me develop as a leader, a teammate, and a player - these past two years have been one of the best times in my life! I would like to also thank Drew Laine, owner of The Penalty Box, for giving me the opportunity to work and learn about running a business during my time playing junior hockey. I’m looking forward to studying finance and accounting at Nazareth and playing for a great program. “

Schaefer and the Rangers have just one regular season game remaining before postseason play will begin. The 6'3" EHL All-Star forward was part of the 2019-20 Rangers team that won the franchise's first Regular Season Championship, but was unable to see it through with the playoffs being cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, with this weight off his shoulders, Schaefer will look to lead this year's team on a championship run to finish off his junior hockey career.
