ODENTON, MD -- Alex Newton, a defenseman for Team Maryland, has committed to UMass Dartmouth (UMD) for the fall of 2022.
The '01 native of Kalamazoo, MI came to the Eastern Hockey League (EHL) for his final year of junior hockey, and in 43 games to date this season, Newton has tallied nine goals and 25 assists to his credit.
"Alex has shown he is one of the top defensemen in this league," said Maryland head coach and general manager Josh Fusco. "His style of play game in and game out, has helped him earn this success. Alex brings so much to a lineup, He plays a 200-foot game as a D, and that's something special. He is very dedicated and sets the bar high for everyone else every time he steps on that ice. We are very proud of Alex, and cant wait to watch his continued success on and off the ice at the collegiate level."
With Newton's commitment, the EHL extends its streak of sending at least one player per year off to UMass Dartmouth, since the league was formed back in 2013 (nine seasons). Overall, Newton is the 34th player in league history to choose the Corsairs' hockey program.
"I couldn’t be more excited to be joining the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth hockey program next year," said Newton. "Developing a relationship with the coaching staff and learning more about the school over the course of this season, has made it clear that I made the right decision. My first year with Team Maryland has been nothing short of amazing. Coach Fusco and the organization have given me the tools and knowledge I needed to make this next step. Also, a big thanks to my teammates, friends, and family for supporting me throughout my years of hockey."
The EHL All-Star will now turn his attention towards Maryland's final three games of the regular season, and then the upcoming South Division playoffs.
