Railers All-Star Defensemen Set to Join Rams this Fall

WORCESTER, MA -- Jake Barcelou, a defenseman for the Railers Jr Hockey Club, has committed to Framingham State University for the fall of 2022.

The '01 native of Hyde Park, MA is in his 2nd season with the Railers and 1st full year at the Eastern Hockey League (EHL) level. Barcelou spent some time in the EHL last season, but finished the year in the Eastern Hockey League Premier (EHLP), helping the Railers reach the Championship Game at the 2021 Frozen Finals.

“Jake Barcelou has been a key piece to our team’s success this year,” said Railers head coach Sean Bertoni. “He's a steady, consistent defenseman, that logs a lot of minutes. Jake is a quick learner who was very coachable from day one. He accepted the role of a shut-down defenseman and was willing to hold back some of his offensive skills in the best interest of our team’s goals. We couldn’t be happier for Jake achieving his goal of playing college hockey.”

Looking back on Barcelou's overall numbers throughout his junior career, and the steady defenseman tallied 12 points in 27 total games in the EHLP last season, including a goal in the Championship Game that was mentioned above.

As for his time in the EHL, to date for his career, Barcelou has nine points in 58 total games. The veteran defenseman has enjoyed his time with Worcester, and is beyond happy that it led him to this next step with Framingham State.

"I really liked it there and I really liked Coach Bailey,” said Barcelou. “He is really looking to continue to build what he terms as an up-and-coming program. Two of my former Railers teammates [Johnny Baker and Joey Lizotte] attend Framingham State and play on the team and they spoke very highly of the entire Framingham experience and certainly of the hockey program.”

The EHL All-Star went on to thank everyone that helped him reach this goal, and in particular the staff involved with the Railers program.

"I never would have known that the game of hockey could be that deep if I didn’t come to play for the Railers,” added Barcelou. “They preached physical play. They taught me how to engage and use my body more. The Railers staff helped me to find a strength & fitness mentor to work with me during the off-season. My strength and conditioning program during the summer months has had a big impact on me. I am roughly 30 pounds of good muscle heavier than I was the first day I became a Railer, and that has had a big impact on me and the way I am able to play the game.”
