Railers Forward Set to Join Rams this Fall

WORCESTER, MA -- Ben McGlashing, a forward for the Railers Jr Hockey Club, has committed to Suffolk University for the fall of 2022.

The '01 native of Arlington, MA recently finished his first and only season with the Railers, and in 50 total Eastern Hockey League (EHL) games, McGlashing tallied 23 total points to his credit.

"Ben came to us from a couple of NCDC teams, and one NAHL team, and dedicated himself to learning, being coached, and being a tremendous teammate," said Railers head coach Sean Bertoni. "Ben McGlashing first and foremost is a tremendous young man. Ben is a strong, puck possession guy, with a big frame. A dedicated young man that we will miss tremendously. He is a fantastic student and we are excited that he will be attending Suffolk University as a student-athlete.”

McGlashing adds his name to what has become a very strong incoming freshmen class at Suffolk, as he is now one of eight EHL players heading to school in Boston this fall. Overall, the Rams have committed 33 total players from the EHL since the league was formed back in 2013.

"Boston is where I have always felt most comfortable,” said McGlashing. “After touring at Suffolk and meeting the coaching staff, it is where I felt most at home. Being close to home was a big thing for me, as I can now stay close to my grandparents.”

The 6'4" forward went on to talk about his age-out season with the Railers, and how it ultimately led to this moment.

"I have to truly say that this past year was the best year of hockey I’ve ever had,” added McGlashing. “Every part of it. Coach [Mike] Addesa and Coach Bertoni were like second father figures for me. They are the type of people who I not only looked to just to improve in hockey, but to help me become an even better person. It was the best decision I ever made joining the Railers. With the Railers, you have a smile on your face every day. Choosing the Railers was the best decision I ever made. If I had a chance to do it over again, I would only do it sooner. In the locker room it was the closest group of guys I’ve ever played with. Every player in that room, I don’t think I will ever fall out of contact with any of them. The atmosphere really makes you want to work your hardest.”

As the 2021-22 season came to an end for McGlashing and the Railers, he also received special praise from Addesa.

“A friend, a hockey person that I respect, an advocate for Ben McGlashing, approached me in my capacity as  General Manager of the Railers on behalf of Ben," said Addesa. "Out of respect for that person, I agreed to meet with Ben on the phone and from there I suggested he meet with Coach Bertoni, tour our facility and explore the potential of the Railers program and the possibility of becoming a Railer. Both Coach Bertoni and I were very impressed with Ben from our first contact with him. Ben absorbed Coach Bertoni’s coaching technique like a sponge and before you knew it Ben became one of the best defenders on our entire roster. That growth in the defensive side of the game and Ben’s continued growth through the efforts of our assistant coaches working with him in the face-off circle, he became one of the best face-off men in the league. Ben sacrificed offensive opportunities to do what his coaches felt would serve his team and teammates best. He is a special young man who has become a complete and special hockey player.”
