Howat's 4-Goal Game Headlines Star Selections

BOSTON, MA -- We're just about five months into the season, with two months still to go in the Eastern Hockey League (EHL) and the Eastern Hockey League Premier (EHLP).

Below you'll find the 19th set of weekly top performers for the 2022-23 season. The forward and defensemen awards are presented by Verbero Hockey, while the goalie honors come courtesy of Vaughn Custom Sports.

EHL STARS OF THE WEEK #19

The EHL is pleased to announce that Koby Howat (Philadelphia Little Flyers), Justin Fernet (Connecticut RoughRiders), and Daniel Niewiarowicz (Connecticut RoughRiders) have been named the Top Performers for Week #19.

Howat and the Little Flyers won two out of their three games over the past seven days, and claimed five out of a possible six total points. The 2-0-1 week helped the Little Flyers keep pace in the frantic South Division standings.

As for the '02 native of Honey Brook, PA, after being held off the scoresheet in Philadelphia's 2-1 shootout loss to the New Jersey 87's on Tuesday, Howat bounced back by tallying seven points in the next two games combined. After notching a pair of goals plus an assist in the Little Flyers' 6-4 victory over the Protec Jr. Ducks on Friday, Howat delivered an incredible encore performance earlier today with four goals in a 5-4 win over the New York Apple Core. It's worth noting that one of Howat's goals against the Ducks stood as the game-winner, and three of his tallies today came on the power-play. Overall, the second-year forward now has 26 points through 35 games to date, which puts him just five points away from the total he racked up combined between the regular season and the postseason this past year. Howat and the Little Flyers will wrap-up their two-game set with the Apple Core tomorrow at Noon.

Moving back to the back end, Fernet and Niewiarowicz helped pave the way to back-to-back victories this past Thursday and Friday for Connecticut. After knocking off the 87's by a 4-1 margin on the road on Thursday, the RoughRiders returned home on Friday, and claimed a 6-2 victory over the Philadelphia Hockey Club (PHC).

Starting first with Fernet, the '03 native of Canada scored a trio of goals over the two games combined, giving him now 15 points in 26 total games since joining the team in mid-October. Fernet now has tallied six points throughout his last five games, and he's scored three power-play goals throughout that stretch.

As for Niewiarowicz, the '02 native of Golden, CO got the nod for the matchup against the 87's, and he simply didn't disappoint en route to turning aside 54 of the 55 total shots that he faced. The near-perfect performance led to the start against PHC as well, where he made another 41 saves on 43 saves.

The phenomenal two-game stretch improved the second-year goalie's record up to 8-9-3 for the season, to go along with a 3.22 GAA and a .923 save percentage. The RoughRiders are one of three teams in the Central Division who are tied for 2nd place with 27 points.

EHLP STARS OF THE WEEK #19

The EHLP is pleased to announce that Drake Tomak (Boston Jr. Rangers), Cody Draves (Pennsylvania Huntsmen), and Aidan Gambone (New Jersey Renegades) have been named the Top Performers for Week #19.

Tomak and the Rangers hit the ice for three games this past week, and took care of business by claiming victories over the Valley Jr. Warriors, the Railers Jr. Hockey Club, and the New England Wolves. As for the '03 native of Pittsburgh, PA, Tomak scored in all three contests, extending his streak up to 11 straight games with a goal. The leader on offense for the Rangers also notched a pair of assists, as his overall totals increased up to 47 points in 33 total games to date.

Also, with the trio of victories, Tomak and the Rangers have now taken over 1st place in the Boston Division standings. While they have just a single-point lead over the Railers, they do also own two very important games in hand over their rival. The Rangers will take on the Warriors again on Wednesday, before gearing up for pair of matchups at the New Hampshire Avalanche this weekend.

Draves and the Huntsmen won two of their three games this past weekend, splitting their home-and-home series with Renegades, and knocking off the Philadelphia Little Flyers in the game in between. As for the '02 native of Dowington, PA, the captain of the Huntsmen notched three total points on a goal and two assists. Draves had gone eight straight games without a point, before tallying three over a two-day span to wrap-up the weekend.

At 21-11-2, Pennsylvania is essentially locked into the #2 seed in the Mid-Atlantic Division, as they trail the New Jersey 87's by five points for the top spot, and it's worth noting that they've played two more games than their newly-formed rivals. Regardless of that fact, Draves and the Huntsmen will look to try and make up some ground when they host New Jersey on Saturday night.

Wrapping things up in goal, Gambone was in net for the Renegades in New Jersey's victory over the Huntsmen this past Friday night. The '05 native of Raleigh, NC delivered a near-perfect performance en route to his 5th victory of the season. Gambone's 42 saves on 43 shots paved the way to his 2nd straight victory, as he's now stopped 81 of the last 82 shots that he's faced.

Gambone and the Renegades are dead-locked with the Little Flyers for 3rd place in the Mid-Atlantic. This battle is important of course, as whoever claims the #3 seed will be guaranteed at least a best-of-three playoff series, while the #4 seed will have to hit the ice for the division's single-elimination play-in game.
