One Week ’Til The Trade Deadline

BOSTON, MA -- As another week goes by in the Eastern Hockey League (EHL) and the Eastern Hockey League Premier (EHLP), it’s time for another edition of 'Short Shifts Around the #EShow'.

New York Apple Core is still on their massive winning streak, but other teams around the league are heating up as well. Let’s take a look at some of the top stories in the EHL and EHLP.

Chasing History

  • With a 9-3 win over the Connecticut Chiefs on Tuesday, New York Apple Core extended its winning streak to 16 games.
  • They are tied with the 2018-2019 New Hampshire Avalanche for the third-longest winning streak in EHL history.
  • The second-longest streak is 17 games, set by the Philadelphia Revolution in 2017-2018. Apple Core will have a back-to-back against H.C. Rhode Island this weekend, and a New York sweep would make their current heater the second-longest in league history.
  • Speaking of the Avalanche, their 11-game winning streak ended on Thursday with a 4-3 overtime loss to the Valley Jr. Warriors.
  • Cole Fagan scored the overtime winner to take down the Avs, and he's now riding a six-game point streak. With the win, the Warriors also passed the Vermont Lumberjacks for fourth place in the North Division standings.

Division Races

  • Even with Apple Core’s amazing run, the Railers are still three points ahead of them in the standings. It’s a testament to the Railers’ consistency since joining the league.
  • This season, forwards Jack Wineman (25g, 25a) and Connor McAleer (19g, 27a) are among the league leaders in scoring, as well as defenseman Tristan Boyer (6g, 36a).
  • Goaltender Adam Casper has been lights out for the Railers as well. He leads all EHL goaltenders with a .938 save percentage and four shutouts.
  • The Express Hockey Club defeated the Seacoast Spartans 3-2 in a shootout on Thursday. Hudson Perry and Gavin Simopoulos scored, while Phillip De Champlain made 41 saves. Their winning streak is up to five games.
  • With the win, the Express and East Coast Wizards both have 54 points at the top of the East Division, and the Express have two games in hand.
  • The New Jersey Bears are on a four-game point streak (2-0-2) and recently defeated the Philadelphia Little Flyers by the score of 4-3. After a stretch in December and January that could only be described as a hibernation period, the Bears are back to their winning ways and still lead the South Division.

Additional Notes

  • The Connecticut RoughRiders had an impressive comeback win last Friday. Down 5-0 against Team Maryland in the second period, Connecticut scored six of the next seven goals and won the game in a shootout.
  • RoughRiders goaltender Nathan Zerrenner came into the game midway through the second period and stopped all 33 shots, then for good measure, he made three more saves in the shootout to earn the win.
  • Nick Marrocco has been red-hot for the Boston Jr. Terriers; he has points in four consecutive games plus a hat-trick in Boston’s 6-3 victory over the Valley Jr. Warriors on Wednesday.
  • Freeze! February 15th will be the final day teams can take in players from outside the EHL or EHLP. Organizations with an EHL and EHLP team can still send players between the two levels until the end of the regular season.

Around The EHLP

  • The Railers have won eight straight games and have a 32-3-0 record. If they can win six of their next seven games, they will set the new EHLP record for wins in a season.
  • Right now, the record is set by the 2017-2018 Boston Jr. Rangers with 37 wins, and that was with a 44-game schedule instead of a 42-game slate.
  • In the Mid-Atlantic Division, the Pennsylvania Huntsmen have won 13 straight, and they have a five-point lead over the second-place New Jersey 87’s.
  • The Adirondack Jr. Thunder are one point away from clinching the New England Division. Like the Huntsmen, they are having a phenomenal second season in the EHLP and will look to punch a ticket into Providence this spring.
