BOSTON, MA -- Luciano Chinappi, an '04 birth year from Rochester, NY spent two seasons developing in the Eastern Hockey League Premier (EHLP), and recently committed to SUNY Potsdam for the fall of 2024.
Chinappi enjoyed pair of seasons of junior hockey in the EHLP, playing just five regular season games in his rookie year. He catapulted that total to 16 in his second season, with a save percentage of .932 to boot, amongst the best in the league. In 25 combined games between the 2023-24 playoffs and regular season, he won 17 of them.
“I couldn’t have committed without my time in the EHL,” said Chinappi. “I wasn’t the best goalie coming out of high school, but I took a chance. The coaches were unbelievable and were looking to make us better on and off the ice every day.”
The process with Potsdam was a rapid one, taking place over the course of just a few days in Mid-August. However, due to his connection with former EHL goaltender and current Potsdam Bear, Lenny Perno, the school was amongst his top choices. After watching his film and receiving word that Chinappi had been accepted, the Potsdam coaching staff moved forward with the process.
“I was fortunate to have this opportunity,” said Chinappi. “Knowing Lenny had nothing but good things to say helped me realize it was a good fit. We had a camp last week with a private skills coach. It has been an adjustment with how high speed it is, but I’ve held my own.”
Chinappi is now the second direct commitment out of the EHLP from this year’s class.
“With (Charlie) Dimartino from the Express committing, it feels like we’re being seen more in the P," added Chinappi. "No matter the circumstances, the slogan is ‘player’s first’ and the development shows it. I know plenty of guys I’ve played with in the EHLP could do this.”
