A Look at the Division Races

BOSTON, MA -- As Thanksgiving break approaches, the Eastern Hockey League (EHL) is approximately one-third of the way through its season.

Last week, the North, East and Central Divisions took part in the November Regional Showcase at Cadillac Ice Arena, home of the Express Hockey Club. Coming out of the showcase, some teams have picked up steam while the divisional races are heating up.

Here’s a glance around the league in this week’s edition of Short Shifts.

Taking the Express from Walpole

  • The Express is the hottest team in the EHL right now, currently riding a six-game winning streak. They swept the showcase including a win over the East Coast Wizards, and kept the momentum going with a 5-2 win over the Providence Capitals on Tuesday.

  • Forward Ville Bodin has played a big part of their success as of late, the ’05 from Sweden is on a four-game point streak and had three points (1g, 2a) against Providence.

  • Heading into the weekend, the Express (11-1-2) is three points back of the Wizards (13-3-1) for the top spot in the East Division, but they have three games in hand over East Coast.

  • Another team picking up steam in the East is the Boston Jr. Eagles, who have won three straight. They defeated the Bridgewater Bandits 6-5 in overtime on Tuesday, as Jack Dalto tied the game late in the third and Brady Erickson scored the OT winner.

  • Riley Van Son picked up two more assists, but the Eagles have also been getting help from some Brady’s. Forward Brady O’Connor is second on the team with 13 points (3g, 10a) while defenseman Brady Clark is third on the team with 12 (5g, 7a).

Rhode Island Take Central Stage

  • H.C. Rhode Island has won three consecutive games, all by a final score of 5-2. Their latest win came on Wednesday against the Connecticut Nor’Easter.

  • Jarret Rainey-Gibson, who had a goal and an assist against the Nor’Easter, has been on fire since mid-October. He has goals in six of his last seven games, and eight out of his nine goals this year have come in the last nine games.

  • With a record of 10-7-1 heading into the weekend, Rhode Island is only two points back from the Capitals for the top spot in the Central Division.

  • Meanwhile, the Capitals are coming off a commanding 7-4 win over the Connecticut RoughRiders, Brayden Deschamps had two goals plus a helper in the win.

  • Deaglan Kelly had an assist in that game; he has a point in each of the 18 games he’s played this season and leads the league in points with 32 (14g, 18a). His teammate Daniel Kroon is right behind him with 31 points (13g, 18a).

North and South

  • The New England Wolves stunned the New Hampshire Avalanche on Wednesday with a thrilling 5-4 victory. Ryan Teehan had two goals plus an assist; his second goal came on a breakaway in the final seconds of regulation.

  • That was the fourth consecutive win for the Wolves, and it snapped an eight-game winning streak for the Avalanche. While New Hampshire has two games in hand, the Wolves are only a point behind them for the top spot of the North Division.

  • Meanwhile in the South, the New Jersey Bears defeated New York Apple Core 6-2 on Wednesday. Michael Benkovitz had two goals as the Bears snapped a three-game winless streak. They still have a 12-point cushion for first place in the Division.

  • The New Jersey 87’s are second in the South, thanks to a six-game winning streak that brought them from 2-6-0 to 8-6-0. That streak ended, however, when the Pennsylvania Huntsmen beat them 5-3 on Sunday.

  • Spots #2-#5 in the South are separated by six points. Heading into the weekend, Philadelphia Hockey Club is the only team in the division with consecutive wins having swept a home-and-home against the Philadelphia Little Flyers.

  • However, the Little Flyers bounced back with a 5-1 win over the Huntsmen on Wednesday, as veteran Christian Kinsler and newcomer Aleksander Suvorov each had a goal plus an assist.

Around the EHLP

  • The New England Wolves set an EHLP record with 18 consecutive wins, and they achieved the feat in dramatic fashion on Sunday with a 6-5 overtime win against the Avalanche. Lukas Marek buried the game-winning goal to set the new record.

  • Right from the start of the season, the Wolves have been an absolute buzzsaw in the North. The team has already scored 113 goals through 18 games, and five players have hit double digits in goals. Cam Plumb and Zach Spicuzza are tied for the league lead with 38 points while Charles-Etienne Roy has 37. The third highest scorer in the EHLP is Cole Davidson of the Adirondack Jr. Thunder with 31 points.

  • In the East Division, the Providence Capitals are on a seven-game heater. Their most recent win was Sunday, a 5-1 decision over the Express. Jack Farrell had a goal plus an assist; he’s recorded multiple points in games in eight of the 13 games he’s played this season and has 22 points (9g, 13a) through 13 games.

  • The Connecticut Nor’Easter AAA Academy is another team to watch out for in the East. They’ve only played 11 games so far, but they are on a seven-game point streak with a 5-0-2 mark in that stretch.

  • In the South Division, the 87’s are humming along with five straight wins. Goaltender Patrick McGillicuddy has five shutouts and is in a four-way tie for the EHLP single-season record. The all-time record is seven shutouts, which was set by an 87’s alum and current EHL goaltender for the Nor’Easter, Jason LoRicco.
