BREWSTER, NY -- Tyler Gobel, a forward for the New York Apple Core, has committed to Western Connecticut State University (WCSU). Tyler will join the program when it begins NCAA play in the fall of 2025.
An '04 from Linden, NJ, Gobel began his junior hockey career with the Union Jr. Thunder in the Eastern Hockey League Premier (EHLP), where he tallied 18 goals and eight assists in 40 games during the 2022-23 season. He advanced to the Eastern Hockey League (EHL) in the 2023-24 season with Apple Core, contributing three goals and eight assists in 41 games. This season, Gobel has recorded seven goals and 10 assists in 19 games.
"Tyler is everything you could ask for in a hockey player," said Apple Core head coach and general manager Conall McNelis. "He’s hard-working and a terrific leader. I think he’s the exact type of player you want to help build a program. I couldn’t be happier for him and for WCSU."
Gobel expressed his excitement about the commitment, saying, "Committing to a school this early is an incredible feeling. It’s such a relief to have that weight lifted off my shoulders for the rest of the season, and I couldn’t be more grateful. Moving into the NCAA has always been a dream of mine when it comes to hockey, and I’m proud I was able to showcase my game at that level during the All-Star Series."
He also commented on how the league helped him gain exposure by stating, "I truly appreciate how this league is structured—it’s designed to give us the exposure we need to advance to the next level. My time with Apple Core has been instrumental in my development, providing me with every opportunity to succeed. I’m beyond thankful for Apple Core, this league, and, most importantly, my family and coaches who’ve supported me throughout my entire junior hockey journey."
Gobel will join current teammate Liam Lane from the Apple Core at WCSU next season.
