Battling for Playoff Positioning

BOSTON, MA, -- The weather has been frigid up and down the Eastern Seaboard all throughout January, but the action around the Eastern Hockey League has been heating up since the holiday break.

Most EHL teams have hit the 30-game mark in the 2024-25 campaign, and we’re only a few weeks away from the regular-season finale with the Aston, PA showcase.

Here’s a look around the league in this week’s edition of Short Shifts.

One-Two punch in North

  • The New Hampshire Avalanche and New England Wolves are dominating the North Division. The Avs are 13-0-3 and have not lost in regulation since November 13, while the Wolves are riding a 10-game winning streak.

  • New Hampshire’s run includes a recent 8-4 win over the East Coast Wizards. Jake Hines netted a hat trick with a power-play goal, even-strength goal and a shorthanded goal. Their most recent win came on Thursday; a 4-1 victory over the Providence Capitals as Grant Burback recorded a goal plus an assist.

  • During the Avs’ 16-game point streak, the Wolves managed to beat them twice in the shootout. As of this writing, they trail New Hampshire by six points with a game in hand for the top spot of the North Division.

  • The Wolves’ most recent win came on Thursday as they took down the Valley Jr. Warriors 4-2. Joseph Bastien-Picard had three assists as he joined Brendan Fields (35) and Harrison Kramer (34) as the third Wolves player to hit the 30-point plateau this season.

  • Over the weekend, the Valley Jr. Warriors and Vermont Lumberjacks had an entertaining back-to-back. The Warriors took the first game on Saturday as Austin Peterson scored twice in a 5-2 Valley win. On Sunday, the Lumberjacks outlasted the Warriors in a 1-0 overtime win. Brayson Bennett scored the game’s only goal while Josh Hope earned his first EHL win with a 23-save shutout.

Putting the ā€˜Eā€™ in East Division

  • Similar to the North Division, the East has been controlled by two teams: the Express Hockey Club and the East Coast Wizards.

  • Going by points percentage, the Express (25-2-3) currently has the best record in the EHL with a slight edge over the Avs. They are also 4-0-1 in their last five games including a 3-2 win over the Seahawks Hockey Club on Thursday. Lode Arts had a goal and an assist in the victory.

  • The Express has been scoring by committee; while Ville Bodin leads the team with 38 points (21g, 17a), nobody else has reached 30 points yet. However, six other players have recorded at least 20 points.

  • Close behind are the Wizards (22-8-1), trailing the Express by eight points. Their loss against New Hampshire also snapped a five-game winning streak.

  • Daxton St. Hillaire continues his remarkable season with the Wizards. He is second in the EHL in both goals (23) and points (50). He had two goals plus an assist in their loss to the Avs. Joey Ala has also gotten red hot since the new year, recording 11 points (1g, 10a) in five games.

  • While the Bridgewater Bandits are fourth in the East, they pulled out an impressive 6-3 win over the Express earlier this month; it was one of the Express’ two regulation losses they have suffered all season.

  • Ben Dias, who had a goal and two assists in that win over the Express, is second among ’06 birth years in the EHL with 33 points (22g, 11a).

Caps Lock

  • The Providence Capitals are leading the Central Division with a 20-7-2 record. They have a four-point lead over HC Rhode Island while having three games in hand.

  • Prior to their loss to the Avs on Thursday, the Caps were rolling with a nine-game winning streak. Daniel Kroon (15g, 30a) and Deaglan Kelly (19g, 21a) are powering the team’s offense with 45 and 40 points respectively while Nick Hansen and Kaden Clegg have both been solid in goal.

  • HC Rhode Island is coming off a dominant 7-4 win over the Boston Jr. Eagles on Wednesday. Kyler Sun notched a hat trick while Mike Bianco had two goals and a helper.

  • Another Rhode Island player recorded three points in that game: Hwanhee Kang had a goal and two assists. A native of South Korea, Kang has four points (1g, 3a) in his first two games with Rhode Island.

Gaining ground in the South

  • The New Jersey Bears are still in first place in the South Division with a 22-8-2 record. The New Jersey 87’s, however, have nearly caught up to them, trailing by one point with a 22-9-1 record.

  • So far coming out of the break, the Bears have won all three of their games including a 5-4 win over the 87’s and a 7-3 win against the Philadelphia Little Flyers on Wednesday. Michael Benkovitz had four points (1g, 3a) in the win over Philadelphia.

  • Duncan Stewart is a new face for the Bears and he’s off to a good start with his new team, recording five points (1g, 4a) in three games.

  • Speaking of offensive firepower, the New Jersey 87’s added two more scorers to their forward group: Dale Campbell and Dan Cardozo. Since returning to the EHL, Cardozo has 12 points (7g, 5a) while Campbell has 10 points (6g, 4a) in their first six games with the 87’s.

  • As usual, the South Division is tightly contested. Philadelphia Hockey Club (16-12-3) sits at third place with 35 points while the Little Flyers and Pennsylvania Huntsmen both have 29 points.

  • The Huntsmen won a feisty game over PHC on Wednesday, winning by a score of 8-3. Pennsylvania went 6-for-11 on the power play while David Cook (2g, 2a) and Ryan Arendes (1g, 3a) both had four points. Edward Mirigliano also scored twice for the Huntsmen, and he now has four goals against his former team this year.

Around the EHLP

  • Last week, 87’s goaltender Frankie Smith recorded a 26-save shutout in a 2-0 win over the Huntsmen. It was his eighth shutout in the EHLP, setting a new league record.

  • The very next day, the Union Jr. Thunder snapped the 87’s 11-game winning streak with a 5-2 victory. Isaac Walker, who leads the team with 21 points, had a pair of helpers in the win. Logan Powell made 43 saves on 45 shots.

  • The New England Wolves have won their first two games since the holiday break, improving their record to 25-2-0. On Tuesday they blanked the Avalanche 2-0, and Charles-Etienne Roy netted his league-leading 27th goal of the season.

  • Adirondack Jr. Thunder forward Cole Davidson currently leads the EHLP with 56 points (24g, 32a). He also leads the league with eight shorthanded goals, including a stretch of three consecutive games with a shorthanded tally earlier this month.

  • The East Division is up for grabs in the Premier; the Providence Capitals and Seahawks Hockey Club are tied for first with 33 points while the Express and Connecticut Nor’Easter AAA Academy both have 27 points.

  • The Caps won its most recent game on Thursday, a 3-1 win over the Bandits. Nolan Quirk had a pair of goals and he’s now tied for the team lead with 33 points (14g, 19a).
