BURLINGTON, VT - Cam Gwatkin, a defenseman for the Vermont Lumberjacks, has committed to the University of Southern Maine for the Fall of 2025.
An 04’ out of Lyndonville, VT, Gwatkin is a two-year product of the EHL, as well as a Northeast All-Star. In his rookie campaign, Gwatkin tallied one goal and six assists, but eclipsed those totals in his second season. He registered three goals and fifteen assists in 30 games, leading the Vermont blueline in points.
“Cam came to the Lumberjacks midway through the season,” Lumberjacks Head Coach Jack Lowry said. “We had been in search for a defenseman who was a good teammate, high compete, had offensive skill, and was hard to play against. But the Lumberjacks also ended up with a player who not only took care of the boxes but was much more. At times, I was on the bench alone and Cam would be helping other defenseman during games. He would walk down to me and tell me things they were seeing and I was missing, and we would make adjustments. It was shortly after Cam's arrival that our overall team play improved and we started winning games we had lost in the past. I’m looking forward to watching him grow and develop as a student athlete. Cam is an example of what can happen when you set goals, work hard, and stay on track. I wish Cam all the best.”
Gwatkin is the second blueliner from the EHL to join the ranks at USM, alongside Dalton Roberto (EHC). They compete in the New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) under Head Coach Matt Pinchevsky.
“For as long as I can remember, I dreamed about playing college hockey,” Gwatkin said. “I am so grateful to be able to say I have committed to the University of Southern Maine. I can't thank my parents enough. They have been my biggest supporters since the day I first tied the laces. To my coaches along the way, thank you for the time and effort you put into teaching me the game. A special shout out to Coach Jack Lowry of the Vermont Lumberjacks, who encouraged and guided me getting to the next level. Thank you to the EHL, I truly experienced the league's motto, ‘Where Players Come First.’ And to my brother and to my friends for being by my side and pushing me to be my best. And to my teammates on the Lumberjacks for taking me in as a brother and letting me experience the pure gift of being a Jack. #RollHuskies”
