Avalanche Forward Heading to the NESCAC this Fall

HOOKSETT, NH -- John Scala, a forward for the New Hampshire Avalanche, has committed to Middlebury College for the Fall of 2018. The '97 joined the Avalanche at the October Showcase, and finished the season with 31 points in 32 total games. Scala was an offensive catalyst for his team in the playoffs, especially when he scored three goals in a Second Round sweep of the East Coast Wizards.

"Scala has a lot of offensive talent," said Avalanche head coach and general manager Chris Cerrella. "We did a lot of work on his play away from the puck since he arrived in October and if he continues to develop that end of his game, he will score some goals for Middlebury in the years to come. I am very proud of John and his accomplishments; he is one of the most respectful and coachable players that I have had the pleasure of coaching. I think he is going to be very successful on the ice and in the classroom over the next four years. I wish him and his family the best of luck as he heads to the next chapter of his life."

The '98 forward did face a few bumps this past season, as an injury kept him out of the lineup for the entire month of February. For most players, the last month of the regular season is a nice tune-up for the playoffs. For the native of Massapequa, NY, he made it seem like he had played that whole month, as he was named the TSR Hockey Top Performer following the series with the Wizards. Looking back on the year, Scala is very appreciative of his time with the Avalanche.

"I would like to thank my entire family for all their support over the years and giving me the opportunity to play junior hockey in order to reach my dream of playing college hockey," said Scala. "A special thanks to Coach Cerrella for believing in me and bringing me in this season and pushing me every day to improve. Also, a thanks to Assistant Coach/Owner Mario Martiniello and the entire Avs organization for helping me prepare for the college level on and off the ice. I am very excited to continue my academic and athletic career at such a prestigious school like Middlebury, and I can not wait to be part of their student-athlete community. I would like to send a big thank you to the Zervos family for inviting me into their home and being a part of their family during my time in New Hampshire. I am very excited to be part of the Middlebury team, GO PANTHERS!"
