Breaking Down the First 77 Games of the Season

BOSTON, MA -- It's hard to believe, but we are already over a month into the 6th season of the Eastern Hockey League (EHL). The first 77 games of the year have brought with them a number of great matchups and performances from players across the league.

Below you'll find a breakdown of some of key stats and numbers to date. The next set of TSR Hockey Stars of the Week will be released on Tuesday, October 16th at 9:00am. Be sure to catch the #Eshow all season long on HockeyTV.

TOTAL GOALS - 556

Heading into today's pair of games in the EHL, a total of 556 goals have been scored. Included in that number are 14 hat-tricks that have been recorded so far this year.

Here is the full list of all the EHL players who've netted hat-tricks to date:

Circling in on the first showcase of the season, the 19 EHL teams combined for 105 total goals scored in Walpole (45 on Day 1, and 60 on Day 2). That averages out to just under 6 total goals per contest, as the NCAA Coaches and Scouts in attendance were able to take in a number of low-scoring and highly competitive hockey games.

EHL = PARITY

Through the first 77 EHL games, the league is showing once again, that there is a strong sense of parity amongst the 18 teams.

Here is a breakdown of all the close games so far this season:

  • 52 Games = 67.53% of games have been decided by 3 goals or less.
  • 31 Games = 40.26% of games have been decided by 2 goals or less.
  • 23 Games = 29.87% of games have been decided by 1 goal.
  • 6 Games = 7.79% of games have been decided in overtime.
  • 7 Games = 9.09% of games have been decided in a shootout.

With lots of hockey still left to be played, it will be interesting to see how these numbers change as the season progresses. However, if the pattern sticks, it's clear how important every single goal is this season in the EHL.

It's also worth noting that over the course of the entire 2017-18 season, a total of 12 games required a shootout to determine a winner. As you can see from the numbers listed above, the EHL is on a pace that surpass that total and then some this year.

Finally, looking back at the first showcase of the season once again, 16 of the 18 total games were decided by 3 goals or less. That total equals out to almost 89% of the showcase games.

New England Conference vs. Mid-Atlantic Conference

Last, but not least, every season the debate continues with regards to which conference has the edge. So far this season, the EHL has featured 29 cross-conference matchups with the Mid-Atlantic Conference holding a 16-13 edge over the New England Conference. That lead is due in large part to the Mid-Atlantic teams winning 10 of the 13 cross-conference matchups at the first showcase of the season.
