Breaking Down the First 237 Games of the Season

BOSTON, MA -- The batteries have been recharged, and we're ready to go with the 2nd half of the 2018-19 season in the Eastern Hockey League (EHL). The first 187 games of the year have brought with them many great matchups and performances from players and teams across the league.

Below you'll find a breakdown with some of the key stats and numbers to date. The next set of TSR Hockey Stars of the Week will be released on Tuesday, Jan 8th. Remember to catch the #Eshow all season long on HockeyTV.

EHL = PARITY

Through the first 237 EHL games, the league is continuing to show that there is a strong sense of parity amongst the 18 teams.

Here is a breakdown of all the close games so far this season:

  • 154 Games = 64.98% of games have been decided by 3 goals or less.
  • 105 Games = 44.30% of games have been decided by 2 goals or less.
  • 73 Games = 30.80% of games have been decided by 1 goal.
  • 23 Games = 9.70% of games have been decided in overtime.
  • 17 Games = 7.17% of games have been decided in a shootout.

With just over two months left in the regular season, it will be interesting to see how these numbers change as we head towards the playoffs. Since late November, the EHL has since the biggest increase in its games decided by 2 goals or less. With just under half of the matchups being decided by this tight of a margin, it truly shows how valuable every shift and every goal is across the league.

New England Conference vs. Mid-Atlantic Conference

Every season the debate continues with regards to which conference has the edge. So far this season, the EHL has featured 106 cross-conference matchups, and it's only fitting that the New England Conference and the Mid-Atlantic Conference are all tied up at 53-53.

With just over two months remaining, there are 52 cross-conference matchups remaining on the schedule, all capped off by a pair of games between the New Hampshire Avalanche and two North Division (ATL) opponents to end the year.

EHL Showcase Series

It will be interesting to see where things are at when we head into the first weekend of March. Of course, the majority of the cross-conference matchups take place during the EHL Showcase Series, with the final event coming up later this month on the 13th and 14th.

The fourth and final showcase of the season will feature 17 total games, 16 of which will be cross-conference matchups.

It's only fitting that it comes down to this, as the Mid-Atlantic Conference controlled the first showcase in Walpole, MA, and then the New England Conference turned the tables in Haverhill, MA.

Most recently, each conference won eight games apiece at the December Showcase in Newington, CT.

We are just over 75 days away from the EHL Frozen Finals, which are set to once again take place at Schneider Arena. The EHL is looking forward to seeing who takes care of business down the stretch, and what teams punch their ticket to Providence College.
