TSR Hockey Stars of the Week #15
Nash, Mroz, and Del Tufo Earn EHL Weekly Honors
BOSTON, MA -- The Eastern Hockey League (EHL) is back in action, following a short break for the holidays. This past weekend featured action on every day, from Friday through Monday, and 14 of the 18 EHL teams playing in their first games of 2019.
The EHL is pleased to announce that James Nash (East Coast Wizards), Zikmund Mroz (Philadelphia Little Flyers), and Anthony Del Tufo (Team Maryland) have been named the TSR Hockey Stars of the Week.
The week ahead features a very busy schedule across the EHL, as it includes the fourth and final league-wide showcase of the season. Starting tomorrow at Noon, the next seven days bring us at least one matchup per day and 24 total games. The next set of TSR Hockey Stars of the Week will be released on Wednesday, January 16th. FORWARD - James Nash (East Coast Wizards)
Nash and the Wizards swept their weekend series with the New Jersey 87s and improved their record up to 17-9-1 for the season. If the playoffs started today, the Wizards would be the 4th seed in the New England Conference.
As for Nash, the '98 tallied just a pair of points in the two-game sweep, but each one was a game-winning goal. For the season, the native of Hampton, NH now has 11 goals and 15 assists through 28 games, and his five game-winning goals put him in a tie for first in that category. Looking ahead, the Wizards will play four games in the next six days, with matchups against the Valley Jr. Warriors, the Connecticut Chiefs, the North Carolina Golden Bears, and Team Maryland. Nash and the Wizards are right behind the Seahawks Hockey Club for first 1st place in their division, and they own a pair of games in hand.
DEFENSEMAN - Zikmund Mroz (Philadelphia Little Flyers)
Moving back to the blue line, and Mroz now has his third league honor of the season (December Star of the Month -- TSR Hockey Stars of the Week #12).
The '98 native of the Czech Republic, helped lead his team to a three-win weekend by scoring four goals and dishing out three assists. For the season, Mroz now has 53 points (18 goals, 35 assists) in 31 total games, and he has broken the single-season record for defensive scoring. Former Little Flyer, Nick Magill-Diaz, set a new record with 48 points last season, and Mroz is on pace to set bar even higher this year. Looking ahead, the Little Flyers have their sights set on locking down the regular season championship, as Philadelphia is way out in front with a mark of 28-2-1 to date. Mroz and the Little Flyers are set to hit the ice next at the January Showcase, with matchups against the Connecticut RoughRiders on Sunday and the Walpole Express on Monday.
GOALTENDER - Anthony Del Tufo (Team Maryland)
Wrapping things up between the pipes, and Del Tufo was the anchor for Team Maryland in their weekend sweep of the Philadelphia Jr. Flyers. The '99 native of Livingston, NJ made 60 saves in Saturday's 5-4 shootout win, and then followed things up with 52 saves in the 3-2 overtime victory on Sunday. Del Tufo and Team Maryland have now won three straight games, and the netminder has turned aside 152 of the 161 total shots that he has seen during that stretch.
Looking ahead, Del Tufo and Team Maryland have their work cut out for them if they want to fight their way back into the playoff picture in the Mid-Atlantic Conference. They will look to keep things rolling with matchups against the Seahawks Hockey Club and the East Coast Wizards at the January Showcase.
HONORABLE MENTION - Dominiks Marcinkevics (New England Wolves)
The EHL would like to close out the week by recognizing Dominiks Marcinkevics of the New England Wolves. Despite dropping their lone contest of the weekend, an 8-5 loss at the hands of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights, the 2001 native of Latvia was excellent throughout the contest. The young scorer found the back of the net four times in his team's first game back from the holiday break. Marcinkevics now has ten points in his last three games.
