Avalanche Forward Set to Join Polar Bears this Fall

HOOKSETT, NH -- Mattingly Wierl, a forward for the New Hampshire Avalanche, has committed to Bowdoin College for the fall of 2023.

The '03 native of South Salem, NY got his first taste of junior hockey back in the 2020-21 season with the Maine Eclipse, and then chose to play for the Avalanche this past year.

Overall, in 64 career games in the Eastern Hockey League (EHL), Wierl tallied 52 total points to his credit on 18 goals and 34 assists.

"Mattie Wierl is one of the most coachable and respectful young man that I have ever coached," said Avalanche head coach and general manager Chris Cerrella. "He has a high compete level, and he takes both on and off ice serious; he is a true competitor. His commitment to Bowdoin in just one season with us shows not only is he a great athlete, but he is also a great student and a great young man. He will leave a mark on future Avalanche players to come. He is a true warrior and I am very happy he went to the school of his choice. He will be a great addition to the Bowdoin community."

As Cerrella mentioned, Wierl accomplishes this commitment in just  a single season with the Avalanche, despite having one more year of junior hockey eligibility still remaining. Regardless of that fact, Wierl confirms that Bowdoin was the dream school for him, and he is beyond proud to have achieved this goal.

"I am excited to announce my commitment to Bowdoin College to further my athletic and academic career," said Wierl. "I’d like to thank my family, friends and coaches for helping me get to this point. A special thanks goes out to Coach a Cerrella and the Avalanche program for everything they did this past season. I would also like to thank Coach [Ben] Guite and Coach [Sean] Walsh for giving me this opportunity!"

Wierl is the only EHL player committed to Bowdoin from the 2022-23 season, and the 9th player in league history to land a spot at one of the top academic institutions in the country.
