Rhode Island Forward Finishes Climb to NCAA Hockey

WARWICK, RI -- Will O'Brien, a forward for HC Rhode Island, has committed to SUNY Potsdam for the fall of 2023.

The '02 native of Pittsburgh, PA spent a pair of seasons under the #EShow umbrella, playing out a year apiece in both the Eastern Hockey League Premier (EHLP) and the Eastern Hockey League (EHL).

O'Brien spent his 2021-22 campaign with the New Jersey 87's at the EHLP level. In 47 total games that season, O'Brien averaged over a point per game to his credit, finishing the year with an even 25 goals and 25 assists.

Fast-forward to this past season, and the 87's worked with Rhode Island to help put O'Brien in a better position for himself in his age-out year. In 42 total games this past year, O'Brien tallied 21 more points to his credit on 12 goals and nine assists.

"We made one of the best decisions of the year bringing Will into our club," said Rhode Island head coach James Mello. "He was a special person and player. We had heard about his character and caring for all and he 100% lived up to that. With those traits, he was a guy that would get better from the beginning to the end of practice each day. To see his growth over the course of the season was a pleasure. His ability to score not just goals, but big time important and hard goals set him apart. I am confident that Will will become a key part of Coach [Chris] Bernard’s Potsdam Bears in the years to come!"

O'Brien took the time to express his gratitude, as well as share his excitement for the future.

"I am excited to announce that I will be continuing my athletic and academic career at SUNY Potsdam," said O'Brien. "I would like to first thank everyone at HC Rhode Island for bringing me in and giving me an opportunity. The all helped me grow so much as a player and person, both on and off the ice. HC Rhode Island is a first-class organization that truly cares about growth and development of each player. Thank you as well to my family and friends, whom have always provided me with endless support and I could not have done this without them Lastly, I would like to thank Coach Bernard for providing with this next opportunity. I look forward to my next four years as a Bear!"
