Little Flyers All-Star Captain Set to Lead New Program this Fall

ASTON, PA -- Shane Green, a defenseman for the Philadelphia Little Flyers, has committed to the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) for the fall of 2023.

The '02 native of Bear, DE spent five seasons developing under the #EShow umbrella with the Little Flyers. Growing up just a half hour south of IceWorks Skating Complex, the home of the Little Flyers, Green put on the PLF jersey for the first time back in the 2017-18 season for the program's 16UAAA team.

Following that season, Green would spend the next two years in the Eastern Hockey League Premier (EHLP), and his final three junior years at the Eastern Hockey League (EHL) level. Overall, his career junior hockey numbers show off 51 points in 83 EHLP games, and 46 points in 146 games in the EHL. The 2023-24 Little Flyers' captain ranks 9th all-time in EHL history for total games played.

“I could talk about Shane all day long and what he means to this program and the Little Flyers logo," said Little Flyers head coach and general manager Mark Catron. "He is a leader and captain in every sense of the word; the guy you want to go to battle with on your side and a guy you hate to battle against. He isn’t the type of young man who will be outworked by many, in the weight room or on the ice. Shane is probably the most physically dominant defenseman in the EHL over the past 10 seasons, but he always played the game the right way; he never took liberties on opponents, he just played a mean physical style of play that was well-respected throughout the league. We’re all going to miss having Shane as a Little Flyer, as he’s been a constant in this organization for a long time. Coach [Jeremiah] Ketts and the MCLA program are getting an intense competitor that wants to become better each day, I think he’ll be a leader in that locker room from day one."

Green is one of 16 EHL players from the 2023-24 season that have chosen to help re-launch the MCLA hockey program. The All-Star defenseman is excited for the challenge and grateful for the opportunity.

“First, I want thank God for all the things he’s done for me in my life and looking over me," said Green. "Secondly, I would like to thank my parents for always being there for me and for all the sacrifices they have made for me to play this sport and getting me to where I am today. Next, I want to thank all of my teammates, Coach Catron, Coach Stephane [Charbonneau], and Anthony Lorusso for all the memories and everything they have done for me the past six years. And finally, thank you to Coach Ketts and MCLA for giving me the opportunity to play NCAA college hockey and taking me into the next chapter of my life."

As you can imagine, with the amount of time Green spent developing with the Little Flyers, he became very close with numerous members of the organization. Therefore, it's easy to see why so many people within the program, will miss having the captain around the rink.

“To me, that game is the perfect snapshot of Shane’s career as a Little Flyer," said Little Flyers team president Anthony Lorusso, in reference to Green's two power-play goal performance against Team Maryland in the deciding Game 3 of the 2023 EHL South Division Finals with a trip to the Frozen Finals on the line. "In a win or go home situation, playing in a rink he has called home for 8-10 years for the last time regardless of the outcome with a trip to the finals on the line. Add in the 450 people in the stands, college scouts and what does he do? He puts his team on his back scoring those two power-play goals and dominates the game physically from start to finish. It was the perfect way for Shane Green to play his last home game at IceWorks as the Captain of the Little Flyers."

Tack on the All-Star experience, as well as the back-to-back Frozen Finals appearances, and Green's junior hockey resume is very well-decorated.

Now he gets the chance to add a new page to his journey, as the next chapter begins at the NCAA level this fall.
