Rhode Island Defenseman Set to Join Wildcats this Fall

WARWICK, RI -- Joey Sciabarra, a defenseman for H.C. Rhode Island (HCRI), has committed to Johnson & Wales University (JWU) for the fall of 2024.

The '03 native of Plainview, NY chose HCRI for his final season of junior hockey, and over the course of 17 total Eastern Hockey League (EHL) games to date, Sciabarra has notched an even four goals and four assists to his credit.

"Joey
has been great to have in our jersey this year," said HCRI head coach James Mello. "He brings great skating, upper-end skills, and a bit of a pitbull mentality to the game."

JWU has always heavily recruited players from the EHL, as Sciabarra goes in the books as the 33rd player in league history to choose the Wildcats' hockey program. Also, it's worth pointing out that with Sciabarra's decision, JWU has now committed at least one player per season from the EHL for all 11 years that the league has existed, dating back to its inception in 2013.

"I'm super excited to continue my academic and athletic career at Johnson and Wales University," said Sciabarra. "After stepping on campus I knew that Coach [Eric] Graham and the Wildcats are the right family for me. I want to thank Coach Mello, Coach [Nick] DelGallo, and general manager Toby O’Brien for all the support at H.C. Rhode Island."

Speaking of Toby O'Brien, the GM of HCRI took a moment to congratulate his defenseman as well.

"We recruited Joey out of Kent School a year ago and just stayed in touch with him," said O'Brien. "We're very happy for him and his family. JWU got on him early and did a great job telling him, we want you here as we build our program. It is very important to be wanted."
