Rangers All-Star Forward Climbs Ladder to NCAA Hockey

TEWKSBURY, MA -- Akezhan Melis, a forward for the Boston Jr. Rangers, has committed to Albertus Magnus College for the fall of 2024.

The '03 native of Kazakhstan is in his second season with the Rangers, and first full year with program at the Eastern Hockey League (EHL) level. After starting this past year (2022-23) in the Eastern Hockey League Premier (EHLP), Melis earned numerous call-ups throughout the first half, before he became a 'full-time' EHL guy in second half of the year.

Overall, his career numbers to date display just how dynamic of a playmaker Melis is, as he averaged over two points per game in the EHLP, finishing with 14 goals and 21 assists in just 17 total games.

The production didn't slow down by much following the jump, as in 66 total EHL games to date, Melis is still averaging a point per game to his credit, with 20 goals and 46 assists.

"Tay has been tremendous for us the last 2 seasons," said Rangers head coach and general manager Rich DeCaprio. "Starting on our Premier team and working his way up mid-season last year to the EHL team, he has been a huge asset. His hard work and determination along with his high-end skill set and IQ will set him apart at the NCAA level. We are very happy for him and his next chapter in life!"

As DeCaprio mentioned, Melis possesses a high-end skill set, which was quickly recognized through his selection to the EHL's Main All-Star Team this past October. In the league's matchups against SUNY Fredonia and SUNY Brockport, it was clear on many occasions that Melis had the potential to be the best player on the ice, with every shift that he took.

"For we walk by faith, not by sight -- I am extremely proud to announce my commitment to play college hockey for the Albertus Magnus Falcons," said Melis. "Many thanks to my families, friends and coaches. Coach DeCaprio helped me grow mentally and physically, giving me advices during the game and helping me to score based on those advices. He put in a lot of effort and trust in me that helped me play my style of hockey and make the most out of it. I have had an unforgettable two years at Boston Junior Rangers, making a lot of lifelong friendships and memories. Playing with the guys that wear the same logo and battling through adversity and many rough patches together speaks volume of this team. I’m excited to see where it’s gonna take us."

Where it will first take Melis and the Rangers is into 2024 in control of first place in the East Division standings. Playing in arguably the toughest of the four division, Melis and the Rangers know the challenges that lie ahead of them, as they look to make a run back to Providence and the Frozen Finals.
