Avalanche Second-Year Defenseman Set to Join Golden Bears this Fall

HOOKSETT, NH -- Malachy Beyer, a defenseman for the New Hampshire Avalanche, has committed to Western New England (WNE) for the fall of 2024.

The '03 native of Rye, NY is in his second season with the Avalanche, and third year if you count a year at the 18U AAA level with the program. As for his two seasons in the Eastern Hockey League (EHL), Beyer has hit the ice for a total of 53 games, tallying 27 points along the way.

"I am very excited that Malachy will be joining Western New England next season," said Avalanche head coach and general manager Chris Cerrella. "He has been a great player and leader for us over the past two years and he has reached his goal of playing NCAA hockey. Coach [Mike] Young is getting a very good young man and a great player. I am looking forward to watching him throughout his collegiate hockey career; he's a great edition to the WNE community for sure. I wish Mal and his family the best of luck, he will be missed here in Hooksett."

Beyer is the first player in the EHL to commit to WNE so far this season, but he's also the 36th player in league history to choose the Golden Bears' program.

"I'm proud to announce my commitment to further my academic and hockey career at Western New England University," said Beyer. "I would like to thank everyone who has helped me along the way especially my parents, siblings, Coach Cerella, and the Avs organization. I would also like to thank Coach Young for giving me the opportunity to be a part of what he’s building at Western New England."

As for the rest of Beyer's age-out season, the Avalanche clinched the #1 seed in the North Division this past Saturday, following a victory over the Providence Hockey Club. Now, looking ahead, Beyer and his teammates will push for the Regular Season Championship, and then get set for what they hope will be another run to the EHL Frozen Finals in Providence, RI.
