The '04 native of Pomfret, CT is in his second season with HCRI, and over the course of 82 career games in the Eastern Hockey League (EHL), the defensive defenseman has tallied nine total points to his credit.

"We are proud of and happy for Ian and the entire Wolanin family on his commitment to St. Michael’s College," said HCRI head coach James Mello. "Ian and his family embody everything that we are about here at H.C. Rhode Island. His personal dedication to his teammates and his personal development is second to none and led to his being our first two-year captain, as an '4. The St. Michael’s hockey team, and more so the St. Michael’s community, just got a little better with the addition of this first-class human and competitor."

As Mello mentioned, Wolanin has served as HCRI's captain throughout their first two years in the EHL. That leadership, when combined with his contributions on the ice, is a big reason why the 6'2 defenseman is taking the next step despite having a year of junior eligibility still remaining.

"I am very excited to be a Purple Knight," said Wolanin. "I am super grateful and humbled to have the opportunity to play NCAA college hockey. Coaches [Damian] DiGiulian and [Lilly] Holmes have been great throughout the recruiting process and I am excited to play for them. After seeing the school and meeting the team, it was clear that this was the place for me. I would like to thank my family and everyone at H.C. Rhode Island and Pomfret School for helping me achieve this goal."

The fondness and appreciation for Wolanin is felt throughout the HCRI program, including Toby O'Brien, the general manager of the team.

"I have had the honor of knowing and working with Ian and the entire Wolanin family for many years now," said O'Brien. "There are very few players over the years that care more about their teammates and their personal growth than Ian Wolanin. Through many challenges, Ian has stayed true to his personal goals, his friends, teammates, and his family. They don’t make them better than this young man and I could not be prouder!"

Wolanin are battling right in the thick of things in the tight Central Division. With this weight now off of his shoulders, Wolanin will look to continue to lead his team down the stretch and into the postseason.
