Railers Second-Year, All-Star Defenseman Set to Join Leopards this Fall

WORCESTER, MA -- Tristan Boyer, a defenseman for the Railers Jr. Hockey Club, has committed to the Wentworth Institute of Technology (WIT) for the fall of 2024.

A two-year Railer out of Canada, the '03 earned honors as an All-Rookie Team defenseman last season, tallying seven goals and 18 assists. He currently sits amongst the highest scoring defensemen in the EHL this season, with six goals and 31 assists.

“Tristan is a dynamic defenseman,” said Railers head coach and general manager Sean Bertoni. “He has great offensive instincts and offensive skills. He has grown so much in many areas on the ice, and developed his game into being a stronger defender. He’s worked on his skating, and at this point, he really dictates play. His confidence has grown which has made him a mature player.”

It's easy to point towards Boyer's time with the Railers as the reasoning behind the growth he has shown on the ice, but it's also worth mentioning that the versatile defensemen was named an EHL All-Star back in October.

Boyer was selected to the Central/South All-Star Team that faced-off against Stevenson University and Lebanon Valley College. Now, with that experience combined with his time with the Railers, Boyer is feeling ready to take his game to the next level.

“Coach Bertoni and the Railers are hard on us, and I think that’s what we need,” said Boyer. “We have a lot of intense practices and a lot of training. The discipline too, on and off the ice, is big for us. We stay focused. It’s good preparation for college, which I expect to be similar, and I got a great taste of it all by playing in the college series.”

Although the commitment process weighed on him, Bertoni praised his defenseman’s focus on education, as well as his patience.

“I give him a ton of credit for trusting the process,” added Bertoni. “I think he’s found a perfect match. Wentworth has recruited a lot of high-end guys from our league.”

Look no further for proof of Bertoni's statement than a fellow commitment to WIT, as Wizards' Captain and All-Star forward George Kolovos will also be joining the Leopards this fall.

“I didn’t know what to expect going in,” Boyer recalled. “I wanted to keep playing hockey and focus on what I wanted to do in college for my program. Going to Wentworth, I was able to find both. I knew they were losing a defenseman and they had a spot for me. When I went on a visit, I really loved it.”

With some college competition under his belt, Boyer has a better idea of what to expect come the fall.

“It’s going to be a big step,” concluded Boyer. “I really liked the intensity at the all-star games. The guys are bigger, the game was faster, and the competitiveness was high. I will have to work hard this summer to be ready to go in the fall.”
