Spartans All-Star Forward Set to Join Cardinals this Fall

EXETER, NH -- Jonathan Groth, a forward for the Seacoast Spartans, has committed to Wesleyan University for the fall of 2024.

The '03 native of Newburyport, MA chose the Spartans for his first and only season of junior hockey, and over the course of 42 total Eastern Hockey League (EHL) games to date, Groth has tallied 58 points to his credit on 21 goals and 37 assists.

"Jon has had a great season for us,” said Spartans head coach and general manager Brett Tryder. “He is a lifelong Spartan and it is always a great feeling when you are able to see a player go through your program from mites to juniors. Jon does a lot of things at a high level and I am sure that he will have an outstanding college career. I am very happy to see him reach his goal of playing NESCAC hockey. He has earned this opportunity, both, on the ice and in the classroom."

Groth is currently ranked 2nd in the league in scoring, and his offensive production quickly caught the attention of teams across the league, back when the season started. The recognition was given in the form of an All-Star selection, as he hit the ice for the North/East team that faced-off against Rivier University and Southern New Hampshire University back in October.

"First off I want to say, 'Thank you,' to Coach Tryder and Coach Montecalvo for taking me in this season and putting me in position to succeed," said Groth. "Playing for Seacoast in my only and final year of junior hockey hockey was special to me as I played here for my entire youth hockey career. The facilities and coaching staff, in Exeter have helped to develop my game and prepared me to move on to the college level. I am very excited to play for Coach [Chris] Potter and attend Wesleyan for the next four years."

Groth is one of three total players that the EHL has committed to Wesleyan so far this year, with all three players coming from the North Division. Following a potential future playoff series with the New Hampshire Avalanche, Groth will team up with Robert Martiniello and Connor Hagness when he arrives on campus in the fall.
